About this Item

Hardcover first edition, first printing and first US edition. (Simultaneous with the UK edition by Faber and Faber, but the time zone difference makes the UK the true first edition.) Stated First Edition with printing date "03/2015" on rear jacket flap, making it a March, 2015 first printing. Signed by Ishiguro on publisher's tipped-in sheet. Ishiguro is also winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature. Not a book club, remainder or ex-library copy. This copy also has the publisher's black stain on the page edges. (Copies are already in multiple printings. These later printings have plain white page edges as opposed to the black-stained edges.) The book's green jacket is un-laminated, making it prone to scratches. This jacket is pristine without the "Signed First Edition" sticker present. Caution to collectors: Removing the Signed First Edition sticker can scratch off the jacket's green ink from the jacket cover. There is no sticker on this copy and the jacket is in fine condition. "It's a sad, elegiac story, one that has a tone and texture suited to its subject matter: a dreamy journey, repetitive and searching as lost memory." Lydia Millet - Publisher's Weekly Starred Review. Award History: 2016 World Fantasy Award Nominee for Best Novel (lost to The Chimes by Anna Smaill).(Sceptre). Bookseller Inventory # 004747

About this title

Synopsis:

From the author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day

The Romans have long since departed and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But, at least, the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that now is the time, finally, for them to set off across this troubled land of mist and rain to find the son they have not seen for years, the son they can scarcely remember. They know they will face many hazards—some strange and otherworldly—but they cannot foresee how their journey will reveal to them the dark and forgotten corners of their love for each other. Nor can they foresee that they will be joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and a knight—each of them, like Axl and Beatrice, lost in some way to his own past, but drawn inexorably toward the comfort, and the burden, of the fullness of a life’s memories.

Sometimes savage, sometimes mysterious, always intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro’s first novel in a decade tells a luminous story about the act of forgetting and the power of memory, a resonant tale of love, vengeance, and war.

About Top Shelf Books Top Shelf Books is a Virtual Bookshop specializing in collectible Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror hardcover First Edition books since 1991 and online since 1996. Signed editions, British (UK) editions and Nebula, Hugo and World Fantasy Award winners are also a specialty. Actual Signature Photos. Almost 300 signed First Edition books in our SF, Fantasy and Horror catalogs. Rare and Collectible Editions with their Award histories. In-depth and Accurate Book Descriptions and Conditions. We started as a mail order bookstore in 1991 in the San Francisco Bay Area. We published catalogs on a quarterly or semi-annual basis. Drafting, printing and mailing catalogs were extremely time consuming. Each catalog was written and edited in Word Perfect in the publishing mode, printed at the local Kinko's shop, assembled into catalog format by page number, address labels applied (printed from another program) and finally stamped with postage and carried in boxes to the Post Office for mailing to our customer list. Our last catalog before going online was our Spring/Summer 1996 catalog. Top Shelf Books was one of the first specialty booksellers to go online. We actually had to create the website, page by page, coding in HTML. Each book's jacket had to be scanned and uploaded.
