The catalogue provides biographical deals of the persons appearing in the portraits and pictures at Woburn Abbey. This copy is presumed to be from a preliminary private printing - the full work was subsequently published in 1890 in 2 volumes comprising over 450 pages per volume, accompanied by reproductions of many portraits. A pleasing presentation copy. Signed and inscribed by one of the authors "To Her Grace the Duchess of Bedford from her affectionate Adeline M. Tavistock, Sep. 23 1889." Adeline Marie Somers-Cocks (1852-1920), Marchioness of Tavistock and co-author of the book was the daughter-in law of the then Duchess of Bedford (Elizabeth Russell, née Sackville-West 1818-1897) and was herself to become Duchess of Bedford within 2 years of this gift on the death by suicide of her father-in-law (Francis Russell, 9th Duke of Bedford) in 1891. Joints rubbed and corners slightly rubbed, otherwise Very Good.
