CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - 1ST EDITION HARDCOVER SIGNED BY ROALD DAHL This is a Borzoi Book, Published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. c1964, Good + Condition, no dust jacket. 162 Pages, binding fine with front-end paper slightly loose, light soiling on back book cover. Red Cloth Embossed Book Cover. The 5-line colophon indicates it is the first edition, second issue. Love hand printed and signed Roald Dahl in ink on the front mustard-colored book end paper. Diane P. Evans 10862 Vicenza Way Los Angeles, Calif. 90024 is ink stamped on the inside cover. This is the Bel-Air, California address where I lived with my parents, Creed M. Evans M.D. and Diane P. Evans, from 1965 until 1979. Carroll Shelby purchased this house from my father in the 1990s. Creed M. Evans M.D. was a WWII US Army Air Corps transport pilot prior to becoming a physician. He was stationed at times during the war in England. Roald was a WWII British Royal Air Force fighter pilot and later an intelligence officer. Their wartime experiences in England could be the reason for an association. Creed practiced medicine in Beverly Hills and Westwood, California in the 1960 s and 1970 s. While Roald was married to actress Patricia Neal, they spent time in the Los Angeles area where she worked doing both movies and television. But there is a second possible association with Diane Evans Father (my grandfather and namesake) Frank V. Phillips, ASC. Frank had a 40-year movie making career, starting as a motion picture camera film loader and ending as an Academy Awards Nominated (Disney s The Black Hole 1979) Director of Cinematography. Frank filmed scores of motion pictures and television series episodes over his career and could have worked on one or more productions in which Patricia had an acting role. Furthermore, Roald wrote and co-wrote motion picture screenplays, so Frank might also have had an association with him through working for the studios. I inherited the book when my father Creed passed away in 2015. It would make a nice addition to a collection of the first edition, autographed, Roald Dahl books. REASONABLE OFFERS CONSIDERED.
