This copy is inscribed by Jack Dempsey on the half-title page to pioneering African American sportswriter Wendell Smith. Wendell Smith was a stalwart scribe for the Chicago Afro American newspaper and famously collaborated with Jackie Robinson on the all-time baseball great's autobiographical account of being the first black player in the stubbornly segregated Major Leagues.
