Inscribed First Edition, First Printing (with an interesting association) of this celebrated boxing book published at the height of the golden age of boxing. One of the most fabled and hardest hitting champions of the first half of the 20th Century -- Jack Dempsey -- renders an expert dissertation on the pugilistic arts. Key concepts for the student of boxing according to professor Dempsey: explosive punching and aggressive defense. This copy is inscribed by Jack Dempsey on the half-title page to pioneering African American sportswriter Wendell Smith. Wendell Smith was a stalwart scribe for the Chicago Afro American newspaper and famously collaborated with Jackie Robinson on the all-time baseball great's autobiographical account of being the first black player in the stubbornly segregated Major Leagues. "To Wendell Smith. With my best always, Wendell, from your friend, Jack Dempsey." Burgundy cloth, 264 pages, illustrated. (States "First Edition" on the copyright page. No dust jacket. Has a couple light bumps at edges and corners. On the back endpaper, written in pencil, there's a somewhat long-winded description of the inscription by a previous seller that we've left intact.
