First edition. This first edition collection of Lorde's poetry was her initial release by a major publisher, and is briefly inscribed to her friend and possible former lover Sybil Harriet Landau on the half title: "To Sybil / with love / Audre." While both Lorde and Landau graduated from Hunter College High School in New York, they didn't really become acquainted until they attended college at Hunter in the late 1950s, and then built upon their friendship at Columbia University, where in 1961 Lorde earned a Master's in Library Science and Landau her law degree as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Both women became involved in the civil and gay rights movements, traveling in the same social, artistic, and political circles, and the content of Coal reflects that shared intellectual diversity, delving deeply into Lorde's self-proclamation as a "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," an identification she clearly associated with Landau, too, who, based on the latterly mid-1970s inscription in this book, she still maintained a close personal relationship with.
