Anderson on front free endpage. Anderson was Fermi's principal assistant while in America, including leading the work under Fermi on the Chicago Pile, the first man-made nuclear chain reaction, before traveling to Los Alamos in 1944. Other noted areas of work include the Columbia fission experiments, the Trinity test, and numerous collaborations with Fermi. He was given the Enrico Fermi award in 1982, shortly before his death in 1988 from beryllium poisoning, which he contracted from his early work with uranium.
