Add to basketFirst Edition in dust jacket. Edited by Richard Scheckner. Illustrated with 360 photographs. 'Dionysus in 69 was evolved by the members of The Performance Group, under the direction of Richard Scheckner, from Euripedes's The Bacchae, an Asmat New Guinea ritual, the exercises of Jerzy Grotowski, and their own struggles to find a theatrical language for today. For over a year, capacity audiences came to their garage in New York to see the play and to be in it. Spectators often tried to prevent the killing of Pentheus, the young king, and occasionally they participated in the death ritual, stripping and lying on the floor to undergo symbolic sacrifice with the actors.' from the dust jacket. This copy has been inscribed by Scheckner to editor and publisher, Michael di Capua, on the front preliminary page: "29 June 1970 / For Michael / with whom this book / emerged from theatre to / literature, & still kept its / Theatre. / With much affection & thanks, / Richard." A near fine copy in a very good jacket, which is chipped and torn at the edges. Additional images available upon request.
