One of 1,000 copies. Octavo (23.5cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and publisher's logo in gilt on front cover; [ii],[10],11-171,[3]pp. The dedication copy, inscribed by Schwartz on the front endpaper to his first wife, Gertrude Buckman, repeating the words on the printed dedication page: "For Gertrude / animula, vagula, blandula. / Delmore / December 1938." Slight forward lean, moderate external wear, sunning to spine, with scattered soil to cloth; subtle tanning to text edges and to gutters at endpapers, some occasional faint thumb-soil to text, with a paperclip impression and small paper adhesion to upper margin of front endpaper; four brief pencil annotations (presumably Buckman's) appear on pp.134, 136-137, and on rear pastedown; only Very Good, lacking the dustjacket. A significant copy of the Brooklyn-born poet and short story writer's best-known book, published when he was just 25 years old. The collection contains the title story, the narrative poem "Coriolanus and His Mother," a section of 25 poems, and "Dr. Bergen's Belief," a play in prose and verse. The recipient, Gertrude Buckman, was a book reviewer for The Partisan Review, where the title story was first published. The marriage lasted six years, and the two divorced as a result of Buckman's affair with Robert Lowell. The words from the dedication are the first line of a poem appearing in the Historia Augusta, written by the dying emperor Hadrian; it has been translated many times, often interpreted lovingly, and sometimes more disparagingly.
