First edition. xvi, 403, [1] pp. Large 8vo. The seminal introductory text on elementary number theory, by Hardy, one of the prime English mathemeticians of the 20th Century. Broken up into sections of algebraic theories of numbers, additive theories of numbers, analytic theories of number, and a final section on geometry of numbers or "Diphantine approximation.," this copy belonged to Claude Shannon, father of information theory. It was published the year after Shannon published his important master's thesis, "A Symbolic Analysis of Relay and Switching Circuits." There are annotations to Chapter X: "Continued Fractions," to Chapter XI, "Approximation of Irrationals by Rationals," and Chapter XXII, "Kronecker's Theroem." Publisher's blue cloth gilt. Well read with some soiling to cover, spine lean, front hinge split but holding. Signed in pencil on the front flyleaf: Claude E. Shannon. Seller Inventory # 321295
