Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: G+. Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st. The loss of the small ship MV Joyita in 1955 remains one of the Pacific's most notable maritime mysteries. The vessel went missing when on a short inter-island voyage from Western Samoa to Tokelau , 270 miles to the north, a trip that should have taken no more than a few days. With the non-arrival of the Joyita an intensive aerial and sea search began., It was only after 37 days that the drifting, derilect, partly sunk and damaged vessel was sighted by a passing ship at a posttion 167 miles from the northern Fijian island of Vanua Levu -- more than 400 miles south of Apia where she was bound. There were 25 persons persons aboard, seven Europeans including the master, crew members, some Government officers and businessmen plus 18 Pacific Islanders -- no survivors or bodies were found on the drifting hulk and so began a mystery that became known as the Marie Celeste of Pacific. Like that episode, conjecture, speculation conspiricy theories and legend became woven around the loss of the Joyita and all whio sailed on her for that fated voyage. Some of these are examined in Maugham's book, the first of a number on the Joyita saga, but none have arrived at a proven conclusion. However, his opinions remain as valid as any subsequently advanced. He made a trip to the South Pacific to research for the book and he purchased the hulk of Joyita in the hope of restoring her to voyaging, but that did not eventuate; the little ship was beached and gradually broke up.
