Houston Shaw with the compliments of the author, A H Barkley, 4-16-19') on title page, with an additional credential ('FACS.') added by author next to his name. Boards faintly rubbed. 1913 Hard Cover. 159 pp. 8vo. Original navy blue cloth, gilt titles & gilt triple rule, double blind-stamped rule on front board. A biographical account of several doctors in Kentucky focusing on the practice of lithotomy. Lithotomy is the surgical removal of calculi (i.e., stones formed in hollow organs such as the kidney). Doctors featured are from the 18th and 19th centuries, and include: Dr. Ephraim McDowell; Dr. Benjamin Winslow Dudley; Dr. James Mills Bush; Dr. Robert Peter. Also mentioned is Absolom Driver, an African-American janitor at Transylvania University Medical Hall, whose duties included cleaning the operating room, holding down patients (no anesthesia existed at the time), and supplying and preparing cadavers for dissection. Also included are photographs of medical equipment, examples of extracted stones, portraits of the doctors, and documents, etc. related to their careers.
