BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo, 127 pgs, original tan Morocco leather with gilt stamped red spine labels; all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. With handwritten pen and ink letter from Ellen S. Auchmuty to Newbold (Morris), dated Feb 1, 1895; indicating she had edited her husband's army letters and had a few copies bound. She was sending him a copy the book inscribed by Mrs. Auchmuty on the second blank interior page "Newbold Morris from E.S.A. Feb 1, 1895 CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing and wear to edges, spine labels chipped. The back cover is detached, else solid. Interior with inked inscription to previous owner, else pages are clean and tight. Now with clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: A handsome, privately printed edition collecting the author s Civil War letters. Setting aside a career as an architect when the war broke out, Auchmuty served in the Fifth Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The only son of a wealthy family, and a grandson of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Auchmuty retired a Lieutenant Colonel. The Fifth Corps saw service in several of the war s major engagements, including Gettysburg. Contained in this attractive, thin volume are Auchmuty s letters to his family describing the battles, camps and campaigning. Quite scarce; this copy especially desirable with the family association and Mrs. Auchmuty's presentation note. While unfortunate that the rear cover is detached on this otherwise attractive volume, the thin leather used in the binding often fails; however, the mylar wrapper provides some stability for shelving.
