About this Item
McGraw Hill, New York. 1962. 271 pages. Loosely laid-in is a hand-signed 5x7 photo of the fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, with accompanying ephemera and donation receipt from the Dalai Lama Trust. First American edition, first printing. During this time, McGraw Hill was inconsistent with their First Edition statements. Popular belief is all of their first editions were stated however this does not hold true for this title; specifically, there are no first editions of this title issued through McGraw Hill with the words First Edition. McGraw Hill did, however, label later printings of this title, starting with the second printing. For what it's worth, other first edition, first printing points are the book's covers. Specifically, the first American edition, first printing of this title has gray paper boards with a blind insignia on the front cover, and quarter-bound with a black cloth binding with titles stamped in gold on the spine. Later printings, starting with the second printing, have the same blind design on the front, however they are all black. Other points of note are with the dust jackets. The original first printing DJ has a $5.95 price and no zip-code printed on the back cover of the jacket. The second printing, however, upped the jacket price to $6.95, and added a zip code to the rear cover of the jacket. These later printings are also slightly larger in size, as are the jackets. Nevertheless, this specific first edition, first printing is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. The scarce original first issue dust jacket is present with no zip code on the back cover, and the $5.95 price is intact on the front flap. This first state jacket is bright and attractive. Minor rubbing along edges and a small closed tear on bottom rear edge. The book is tight and clean, inside and out. This is the Dalai Lama's classic memoir, chronicling his first twenty years as the fourteenth Dalai Lama, before being exiled, thanks to China's reclamation of Tibet, and now, a mere photo of the Dalai Lama in your possession, in Tibet, is grounds for arrest. First edition, first printing in its original rare, first issue jacket with a laid-in, hand-signed photo with accompanying ephemera and donation receipt from the Dalai Lama Trust. Near fine/VG+.
