(15.25cm); first binding in dark green linen-grain cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; [x],175,[1]pp, with portrait frontispiece of the author (with accompanying tissue guard) and 7 plates of illustrations. Signed "Henry James Jr / Oct.1906" in pencil on front endpaper. Hint of sunning to spine, some pinpoint wear to spine ends and corner tips, else a clean, very Near Fine copy, lacking the scarce dustjacket. A collection of seven essays on the art of illustration, with each piece containing minor revisions between their serialized versions (in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, New Century, Harper's Weekly, and the New Review) and the book publication. Printed broadside, 11 x 4 inches, title in bold capitals. Praising a photograph of Man o' War taken by Leonard S. Sutcliffe, "those who come after can through this picture more clearly visualize [Man o' War's] greatness than by any written or spoken word" and printing nine testimonials, including one by Harry Worcester Smith, offering further praise for the photograph. Accompanied by a photograph of Man o' War, 4 5/8 x 6 ½ inches, noted in pencil on verso "Miss Daingerfield thinks this is the best picture of Man-o-War ever taken," noting further "Taken by Prof. L. E. Nollen, Univ. of Ky., Lexington, Ky." Daingerfield (1869-1951), daughter of the James H. Keene stock farm manager, was hired by Man o' War's owner, Sam Riddle, at the horse's retirement in 1920 to care for him and serve as his stud manager. The broadside and photo are accompanied by four photographs of Lexington residences and horses, each with the backmark "L. S. Sutcliffe / Horse photographer," and a fifth, taken at Piatt's Brookdale Farm in Lexington, with the backmark of J. A. Estes. All of the material very good.
