Original brown cloth lettered in gold on spines and ruled etc in black. This work has a printed dedication to John Marquess of Bute who funded publication, In volume 1 at top of title page is written "From The Marquess of Bute" and on front pastedown is a publisher's flier stating that this is a presentation copy sent on behalf of Bute "per Steamer from Glasgow". The recipient would appear to be "Maclean of Ardgour" who has appended two slightly different armorial bookplates to early pages of both volumes. Texts are clean and tight but are PULLING LOOSE FROM COVERS so that hinges are cracked in Vol 1 and front hinge is nearly broken in Vol 2. Covers are clean and bright BUT lower joint is split and worn for 40mm (with some loss). Books are in very good minus condition with minor but noticeable signs of wear and/or age.
