About this Item
146 Pp. Red Cloth, Stamped In Black On Spine And Front Cover. First Edition (1931); Other Copies Known In Green Cloth, Gilt On Spine, No Known Priority. Near Fine, Slight Signs Of Use; Signed By Durant On Title Page And Dated 3-24-1980. Dust Jacket Well Worn, Dusty, Torn And Chipped At Edges Without Loss Of Lettering Or Design, Price Clipped. Probably Duirant's Scarcest Book. Real But Heart-Breaking Political Philosophy Applied To Americans' Overall Situation In 1931, Not Politicized Advocacy, But Direct Criticism Of The Broadest Characteristics Of American Culture (Or Lack Of It), American Political Thought (Or Lack Of It), And American Government Action (Or Rather, Inaction On Almost All Issues Of Real Importance, From Water, Air And Food To Every Other Requirement For Rational Life But With Whole-Hearted Support Forall Purposeless Minor Wars And Any Advantages For Special Economic Interests). Still Quite Readable And Interesting, But Even More True Now Than Then; It Is Perhaps Impossible To Rationally Disagree With Any Point Or Line Of The Text, Which Is Admirable For Its Directness And Clarity. Essential Reading, Although These Issues Were Not Debated So Clearly In Public Until Many Decades Later. The Book Was Not Successful In The Most Widely Followed Media. Durant, However, Pursued Such Philosophical Points In Nearly Countless Books, Articles, Radio Addresses, Editorials, And Speeches, And Was Cited As An Important Influence By Many Of America's More Well-Known Public Figures, But He Is Best Known For His 10 Volume, Comprehensive And Opinionated But (Of Course) Quite Non-Specialist Popular History Of Human Culture, Written With His Wife Ariel, Selling In The Millions Of Copies And Still Widely Available- A Sensible Basic History Of The World Of Perhaps Unparalleled Scope.
