First Printing, a review copy, with the publisher's typed slip and promotional photo of the author laid in. Octavo (21.75cm); beige paper and cloth-covered boards, with titles stamped in metallic blue on spine, and geometric pattern embossed onto front cover; blue topstain; dustjacket; [viii],[2],3-437,[3]pp. Inscribed by the author in a contemporary hand on a preliminary blank to New York bookseller Burt Britton: "To Burt Britton / Thanks for putting a RAT in at least one (57th St.) window / Don DeLillo." Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped (priced $10.00), with some subtle yellowing along the edges on verso. A sharp copy of DeLillo's fourth novel, centered around a teenage prodigy mathematician from the Bronx, tasked with deciphering a mysterious and crucial message from outer space at a secret installation. An early inscription to Burt Britton (1933-2018), long-time fixture at The Strand and subsequently at Books and Co., beloved by the author's he befriended and whose works he promoted a real fixture in the New York book scene. He and DeLillo were friends with a shared interest: New York baseball. DeLillo inscriptions with any substantive connection seldom appear in the marketplace.
