First edition copy of Herbert Marcuse classic work " Reason and Revolution : Hegel and the Rise of Social Theory " published by Oxford in 1941. This copy is signed and inscribed to the great scholar Peter Gay, "in friendship" on the front free endpaper. The book has copious annotations in pencil in the margins in Gay's handwriting, and many paragraphs are underlined in pencil as well. The pages are age toned but clean beyond Gay's annotations. 6 pages have a teeny bend at the bottom corner. The binding is firm, although slightly cocked. The front hinge is starting slightly a bit along the edge but is in no danger at all of detachment. Back board is fine. Dustjacket shows some loss at the top of the front panel, now back in brodart. Smaller chips on the back panel, also at the top. Some light creasing along the bottom edges on both sides, moderate rubbing along the spine edge, small chip to top of spine edge as well. There is a small stain on the back panel as well, with no staining present to the boards beneath or the pages inside. A rare and remarkable piece of 20th century history, wonderful association copy between two major figures who had mutual admiration for one another. Seller Inventory # ABE-1647964824313
