A SPECTACULAR 1912 1st Edition, 1st Hand Civil War memoir, presumably the author's own copy as laid in are two actual official Civil War manuscript documents from the 37th Regiment signed by Tyler. The first is an 1863 Pay Requisition form to pay Captain Tyler his salary as well expenses for clothing and food for himself and his servant. The document is signed by Tyler at the bottom right and dated March 25, 1863. The second document is a large folding Payroll and Muster Roll for Company F, Tyler's Company, of the 37th Massachusetts Volunteers, signed by Tyler and 37th Regiment Colonel, Oliver Edwards. This document is printed on both sides, with most of the muster on the recto and the reaming, along with the pay record and signatures on the verso, small pinholes at the fold intersections. " A valuable personal account of the war in Virginia by an officer of the 37th Massachusetts; includes letters, diary excerpts, and a long narrative by the editor." - Nevins "Tyler was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 37th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on August 13, 1862. He would go on to be promoted to Captain on January 17, 1863, and to Major on March 4, 1865. In the field, he was wounded twice, sustaining a shell wound in his chin and neck on September 19, 1864 at the 3rd Battle of Winchester, Virginia, and a gunshot wound to the knee on Match 25, 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia. Twice he was appointed to higher rank - Lieutenant Colonel on May 9, 1865 and Colonel, June 26, 1865, but was never mustered into either rank, having been honorably mustered out on June 21, 1865". The pay and muster roll records 65 members as well as those discharged and one deserter, a Private James Tisdale. This document is signed by Tyler three times while the Pay Requisition, for $456.08, is signed once. The book is in exquisite condition, bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Minor offsetting to pastedowns from tape on the mylar jacket sleeve. Dust jacket in Fine condition, with a small"37th" written on the spine under the title, presumably by Tyler.
