First edition. xvii, 291 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed on flyleaf "For Col. Laurence E. Bunker with the kindest regards, Robert Welch." with slip laid in. American businessman Robert Henry Winborne Welch, Jr. (1902-1977), made a fortune in the candy business, which he used in great part to sponsor his conservative political activism and anti-communist causes. In 1958, Welch, along with 10 other men, including American Army Colonel and former aide-de-camp to General Douglas MacArthur, Laurence Eliot Bunker, founded the influential John Birch Society. The right-wing organization rose in prominence, peaking in the 1970s, and became known for Welch's anti-communist conspiracy theories, including his controversial allegation that Dwight D. Eisenhower was a communist agent. An important association copy. Blue cloth. Fine in about fine dust jacket.
