About this Item

Description:

8vo., 288pp. Beautiful First Edition of this uncommon mystery introducing Captain Staveley, who having been gassed in WWI, cannot leave his room and must rely on others to bring him information which he uses to solve mysteries. Quite reminiscent of Jefferey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme, a quadriplegic ex-cop. Bound in publisher's original red cloth with titles and decoration stamped in black on front board and spine. Illustrated end-papers. Square, tight and clean throughout with little or no wear. A touch of bumping to the heel and top tips but quite minor. Remarkably well-preserved. Quite scarce unclipped dust-jacket, (7/6- net), has a touch of soiling and a small spot of discoloration on the spine. Small chip from the bottom rear flap. Still fresh and bright with no creases or tears. Inscribed, signed and dated in the year of publication by the author on the front end-paper. "E.J. Phelan from Clifton Robbins 11/3/39". Edward J. Phelan, (1888-1967), was a British Civil Servant who became a Director-General of the International Labour Office. He was a signatory to the Treaty of Versailles which closed the hostilities of WWI and also author several books on the topic of labor economics and at least one collaboration with John Maynard Keynes. A simply gorgeous collectable copy and quite difficult to find in such high-grade condition and nearly impossible in the jacket. The association is icing on the cake. (Hubin, p.338).
