First Japan printing of the first edition in English, almost simultaneous with the American printing. Translated by Meredith Weatherby. Small octavo. pp [iv], 183, [2] adverts. Headpiece illustrations by Yoshinori Kinoshita. Pictorial wrappers with flaps. The first of the author's books to be translated into English.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by him on the first blank: ''To Charles Terry with author's best wishes - Y. Mishima''. The recipient was a Japanese translator for the U.S. army during the war, after which he remained in Japan and was a member of an ex-pat group of writers with which Mishima had occasional contact.On the first blank is the ink stamp of the Book Worm, a Tokyo bookshop, and on the front cover is a small price sticker. Small dampstain to bottom corner of rear cover. Some rubbing to covers at edges and joints. Very good.
