In this suspenseful tale set in South Dakota's Black Hills, Vietnam veteran Tom McVay pursues the dope-dealing killer of his younger brother. At the same time, Bill Egan, the last of the great wolf hunters, searches for the last of the long-thought extinct gray buffalo wolves. Protesting the loss of their sacred land, peaceful Sioux Indians illegally set up camp in the Hills, while a group of renegade Indians secretly plot to blow up Mt. Rushmore. A somewhat disappointing grand finale struggles to combine and resolve the various plot elements. On the plus side, the setting itself is of prime importance, and this first novel, at its best, creates a fully realized portrait of the Black Hills and the surrounding countryside.
