September 1943'. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of largely turquoise jacket and spine, some grubby fingerprints and slight overall time staining, spine slightly browned, some spotting to endpapers, corners bruised, not price clipped (10/6), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 283pp, illustrated. A tale of the countryside on the brink of war, with evocative wood engravings by artist and illustrator John Kingsley Cook (1911-94). Countryman and Peak District writer Leslie Crichton Porteous's (1901-91), second book. Very scarce signed.
