8vo., 322pp. Sharp Stated First Edition of this scarce Crime Club title. Bound in black cloth with titles and skeleton motif in red and black on spine. Square and tight with some wear to spine ends edges and tips. Off-setting to end-papers.Some discoloration spots to a few interior page edges but not affecting text. Red top-stain fading. Attractive unclipped dust-jacket, ($2.00), has a 1" chip at the bottom front edge. Smaller chips to the crown and tips. Edge-wear. Still bright and complete and scarce in any condition. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front end-paper. "To Professor Wm. Lyon Phelps, Tech Davis". William Lyon Phelps (1865 -1943) was an American author, critic and scholar who had both a radio program and a regular newspaper column. The many books he authored were centered around the modern novels and novelists. Assuming this was in his possession, in his hand is written a short notation on the last page stating it was read on a train, the date it was completed and he though it was good.
