Add to basketSmall 8vo. Blue cloth with yellow spine lettering, dust jacket. xvii, 177pp. Near fine/very good. Mildest of edgewear only, else tight and internally fine; jacket rather edgeworn, with a few small edge chips, but complete and overall fairly attractive; front endpaper age toned from long-ago newsprint contact. Tight and nice first edition whose jacket front panel describes it: "Can the United States make foreign commitments without a foreign policy and the force to back it up? Can we now agree upon a foreign policy which will safeguard our future?" This special copy bears a fine author inscription in his miniscule hand on the front flyleaf: "To Adlai Stevenson / sincerely / Walter Lippmann / Washington / May 3, 1943." Up-and-comer Stevenson (1900-65) at that time was principal attorney and special assistant to Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, and soon after took a post at the State Department helping to create the United Nations; the Illinois governorship followed in 1949, followed by two losing Democratic presidential bids in 1952 and 1956. Walter Lippmann (1889-1974) is considered the "Father of Modern Journalism" by some and was the leading reporter and political commentator of his era. Stevenson clearly read the book cover to cover, confining his markings to a half dozen pencil rules in the margins. The newspaper clipping that age toned the front endpaper, which Stevenson valued enough to retain with the book, is an installment of one of Lippmann's syndicated "Today and Tomorrow" columns of war date, now safely ensconced in acid-free mylar sleeve.
