The first edition of a paper read before the Sussex Educational Association at Brighton, 6th November, 1876, in response to remarks made by Oxford college head and scholar Mark Pattison (1813-1884) at the Social Science Congress against private schools. The author, of whom little is known, takes exception to Pattison's withering opinions regarding the educational effectiveness of private schools, putting forth an impassioned defence of efficiency of such institutions and argues for their importance to the 'intellectual culture of the middle class'.
