Contemporary calf, spine edges rubbed and beginning to split at the head, joints intact, extensive ms. on the front and rear blanks (13 pages), possibly as stated : 'A short view given of the moral & religious system of Bp. Butler in his Analogy, as extracted from the preface prefixed to the Edition of the Bp. of Gloucester -----', signed HARRIS 1803, with the early signature of SOPHIA CATHERINE MARRIOTT, ex libris RICHARD FREEMAN. *Printing and the Mind of Man #193 - JOSEPH BUTLER [1692-1752], ordained in 1719, 'In 1725 Butler was inducted to the comfortable incumbency of Stanhope in County Durham, where he remained for ten years. Little is known of his life there except that he frequently rode abroad very fast on a black horse and barred his door to beggars and visitors. Answering an enquiry of Queen Anne's about Butler at this time, Archbishop Blackburne remarked that he was 'not dead but buried'. He was neither: he was busy with the preparation of the Analogy.' ESTC N71035 - this is the variant with a comma after 'Revealed' on the title, and one location noted - Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz.
