Large 4to, pp. [4], 178; title page printed in red and black, steel-engraved frontispiece of Thomas Wilson Dorr, 33 other steel-engraved portraits, 42 chromolithograph plates of family crests (some composite), 33 other plates of buildings, residences, etc.; original full green crushed levant stamped in silver, black, and gilt on both covers with family crests, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-paneled spine in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered direct in 2; full brown gilt-stamped doublures, silk moiré endpapers, t.e.g.; edges and spine turned to brown, all else near fine. The binding, I am told by Jeff Stikeman, is by Stikeman & Co., NY: "Most if not all of these extravagant geneaological vanity press editions of the period done for this publisher were by the firm, not always signed, but when signed, carried the last variant of the firm s name, "Stikeman & Co., NY." Numerous families are represented here, not only the Sayles family but also the Ames, Anthony, Brayton, Bush, Carpenter, Child, Frisbie, Guild, Hawes, Lawton, Mitchell, Slade, Welton, and Williams families, among others.
