About this title

Synopsis:

Chosen as a Book of the Year in The Times Literary Supplement, the Evening Standard, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, The Times 'A brilliant novel of deception, love and trust to join his supreme cannon' Evening Standard 'Vintage le Carre. Immensely clever, breathtaking. Really, not since The Spy Who Came in from the Cold has le Carre exercised his gift as a storyteller so powerfully and to such thrilling effect' John Banville, Guardian Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, has retired to his family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old Service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London are to be scrutinised by a generation with no memory of the Cold War. Somebody must be made to pay for innocent blood once spilt in the name of the greater good. Interweaving past with present so that each may tell its own story, John le Carre has given us a novel of superb and enduring quality. 'Utterly engrossing and perfectly pitched. There is only one le Carre. Eloquent, subtle, sublimely paced' Daily Mail 'Splendid, fast-paced, riveting' Andrew Marr, Sunday Times 'Remarkable. Vintage John le Carre. It gives the reader, at long last, pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that have been missing for 54 years. Like wine, le Carre's writing has got richer with age. Don't wait for the paperback' The Times 'Perhaps the most significant novelist of the second half of the 20th century in Britain. He's in the first rank' Ian McEwan 'The literary event of the Autumn' Evening Standard 'One of those writers who will be read a century from now' Robert Harris

Review:

An Amazon Best Book of September 2017: John Le Carré, who you may know from the classic George Smiley spy novels, has returned after 25 years to bring us The Legacy of Spies, an interweaving of past and present storylines that allows new readers a way into these (I'm going to say it... perfect ) thrillers and will have longtime fans swooning. I have loved the Smiley series since I first read book one, so I was more than apprehensive when I heard Le Carré was reigniting the storyline with ‘Legacy’ after so many years (needlessly as it turns out). Peter Guillam, Smiley's most prized assistant, returns with both grace and vengeance as he evaluates life and the lies he has created to survive. Readers don't need to have read the past titles to understand or enjoy ‘Legacy’, but I guarantee you will want to go back and start at the beginning as soon as you turn that final page. --Penny Mann

Store Description

About Preloved books and prints:- I am a small amateur collector selling books to augment an even smaller pension. I specialize in modern first editions (first printing in most cases), especially signed by the author. To me a signed copy means the author has handled and added a little more of themself to that particular book when they would never generally see the vast majority that go on sale. I generally buy at auction houses, book fairs or over the internet so the books are almost never new but I try and sell only books in very good or fine condition. I've also purchased odd lots at auction so I have some older books particularly stories for boys. I also have a few signed autobiographies. I also collect and sell certain signed prints - mainly water colours such as William Russell Flint and animal and bird prints by David Shepherd, Peter Scott, Basil Ede and more modern artists such as John Trickett and John Weiss. I will be honest with a book's description as I would expect to be in return and I will pack and send securely. As a book lover I understand the joy of receiving a much wanted book in good condition. As a buyer my real pet hate is signed books offered for sale with a stock photo of the cover only - so essentially I'm buying something blind? Is it really that much effort to add a photo of the signature? That's why I'll always have photo's of the actual books and signed books I have to offer. Thank you for reading and please check out my signed books.

Terms of Sale:

I will always try to ship orders within 2 business days unless I am away in which case a return email will give my expected return date. I generally follow Royal Mail's postage rates to the UK plus small amount to cover cost of packaging but as postage abroad is significantly higher this is already within the rates quoted by country. If I can send for less (paperbacks etc) then I will do so and this will be done before you are invoiced. Please note most books are hardback and like...
