Inscribed (personalized) and signed by Agnes Danforth Hewes on front free end paper dated April 1952. In good condition / NO dust jacket. Blue illustrated cloth covered boards have light bumping to edges and light overall scuffing and soiling with a bit of the color scuffed off along edges. Spine thinly cracked at half-title page, but binding is otherwise solid. A torn portion of the jacket flap is pasted to the front paste-down. A few pages have light underlining or margin lines in pencil. Pages are lightly aged. Written for young readers aged 10-14, the book explores the fascinating history of the spice trade, tracing its impact on global exploration and commerce. The narrative details Europe's awakening to the allure of spices, the urgent demand for them, and the subsequent expeditions in search of direct sea routes.
