[Nobel Laureate]. J[ack] S[t. Clair] Kilby, Typed Letter SIGNED "JS Kilby", one page (7.25" x 10.5") on his personal letterhead, Dallas, March 14, 1985. A B&W photo (5" x 3 3/4") of Jack Kilby is included. Writing to Michael Gross, the Nobel Prize laureate discusses the first microchip, "a very simple device. It was intended to show that many components could be built on a single semiconductor wafer, rather than for any specific purpose." With the original transmittal envelope from Kilby. Excellent content and superior condition. Jack St. Clair Kilby (1923 2005) was an American electrical engineer who took part, along with Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor, in the realization of the first integrated circuit while working at Texas Instruments (TI) in 1958. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on December 10, 2000. Kilby was also the co-inventor of the handheld calculator and the thermal printer, for which he had the patents.
