About this Item

Volume I with the dedication leaf to Rev. Henry Muhlenberg. With 12 plates (6 in each volume). Contemporary boards re-backed in modern calf; interior clean with light offsetting on a few plates. From the library of Lewis David de Schweinitz (1780-1834) with his small stamp on the front free endpapers. First edition of this valuable work on the botany of South Carolina, the first major botanical work to treat the American South. Elliott (1771-1830) was elected to the legislature of South Carolina and became president of the first state bank. His leisure was devoted to the cultivation of his estate and to literary and scientific studies. His interest in nature led him to establish the Medical College of South Carolina, where he became the first professor of botany and natural history. He has been described as a man of varied talents and extensive information. His collection in natural history was one of the most extensive in the country. De Schweinitz (or von Schweinitz), a graduate of the Moravian College and Theological Seminary, became president of the University of North Carolina where he had the largest private collection of plants in the United States. He is well known as the first major American mycologist, and many of the basic American fungi were named by him. Bookseller Inventory # 11073
