About this Item

James C. Biddle and William Meredith here defend themselves against their imprisonment of 24 days for contempt of court in the trial of three black men (James Cook, Matthew Caldwell, and Thomas Ross) accused of murdering Samuel Alwine. Biddle and Meredith were counsel for the defense. With a handwritten letter affixed to inside of back wrapper. The letter, dated 15 April 1914, is from William M. Reynolds and addressed to Miss C. E. Meredith, presumably a descendant of William Meredith. In the letter, Reynolds offers this very rare item to Meredith at a price of $9. 8vo. 35, [1 (blank)] pp. Shoemaker 8058; Library Company, Afro-Americana (rev. ed.), Supplement 181. Original wrappers; loose, chipped, and stained; remnants of wrappers over spine. First few and final few leaves with heavy stains in top margins. Title-page darkened at top margin. Small chips to corners of first five leaves. Bookseller Inventory # 10325
