Second edition of newspaper editor and publisher Howe's first book, a tale of love and loss set in a small town in Missouri, illustrated with a frontispiece and a full-page engraving by W.L. Wells. This novel is remembered for having been one of the earliest realistic works of fiction to deal with the American Midwest, and an influence on subsequent naturalistic works. The first edition was published in 1883 in Atchison, Kansas, by the author using his newspaper presses. 8vo. 413 pp. BAL 9848; Wright, III, 2802. Publisher's green cloth, front cover stamped in black and spine in black and gilt; small square area of spine discolored. Ex?social club library: call number on endpaper, pressure- and rubber-stamps on title-page, rubber-stamp in margin of three other pages, no other markings. A nice copy. Bookseller Inventory # 26583
