About this Item

First edition. By an American pioneer in aeronautics. Some innovative proposals include achieving a forced descent by using the balloon as a parachute; a plan for a transatlantic voyage; and a plan to bombard Vera Cruz with percussion shells and torpedoes by maneuvering a balloon a mile above the city, and out of the range of the guns, by means of a five-mile cable attached to a warship. Illustrated with 13 plates of balloons, parachutes, and some of its component parts. The sub-title reads: Containing an account of the various attempts in the art of flying by artificial means, from the earliest period down to the discovery of the aeronautic machine by the Montgolfiers, in 1782, and to a later period. With a brief history of the author's fifteen years' experience in aerial voyages. Also, full instructions in the art of making balloons, parachutes, etc. etc., as adapted to the practice of aerial navigation, and directions to prepare experimental balloons. 8vo. Frontis., xvi, [17]?310 pp.; 13 plts. (incl. frontis.) Contemporary black cloth, pressure-stamped on front and back covers by a now-defunct library; both covers, front endpapers, frontispiece, and pp. 305 to end detached, cloth of spine completely gone; cloth peeling over front cover.
