About this Item

New York, octavo, 711, [1] p., four copper-engraved crystallographic plates and numerous text illustrations. A Very Good copy in the original blindstamped brown cloth, with the original gilt-lettered and embossed backstrip. Outer joints tender, inner hinges solid. Covers and spine worn at extremities, but the gilt lettering on the backstrip is complete and bright, and overall the covers are only slightly rubbed. There is light sporadic foxing in the text; the plates display more persistent foxing, but the bulk of the text is quite clean. The binding is very firm. In this edition of his System, Dana discards the Linnaean classification principles he had used previously, adopting a new classification scheme based on similarities in mineral chemistry and crystallography. The only evidence of previous ownership is a blindstamp on a front endpaper. This is a nice copy of a classic treatise, and particularly scarce in the original cloth. BMNH 418. Hazen 2865.
