"The choice of texts that move students on a gut level is great. The selections allow for ranging widely among cultural experience and the classics, but they are presented clearly and accompanied by analytical questions that go straight to the issues."
"The combined thematic and generic organization is as close to the ideal as I've seen to achieve my goals in the second-term composition course, for it encourages an understanding of the elements of various genres...while at the same time emphasizing 'why we need literature.'"
"I think the most important issue for instructors of literature today is to make it individually, culturally and historically relevant... When I use this book -- because of its intriguing mixture and variety -- the themes themselves become sites of contestation and discussion for my classes."
