About this title

Combining contemporary poetry and painting, Torches in Shadows is a rich collection of the work of collaborating artists Cornelia Rohde and Hester Ohbi. Abstract and lyrical, Ohbi’s paintings and collages are a lively evocation of the unseen that are chosen to resonate with a spectrum of poems inspired by the life Rohde experienced in Bangladesh, Haiti, India, Bahamas, Indonesia and South Africa. Her poems explore her perceptions in surprising ways, with a hospitality that welcomes the reader immediately. Whether shadow dancing in the Amatola Mountains, gazing into the eye of an octopus on the Grand Bahama Bank, sailing through rice fields in Bengal, or observing a snail in a Zen garden, her poems engage us with their diversity, and often entice the reader into the unexpected: feeding a dung beetle passion seeds, creating blushing confections of verse with Neruda, or finding the sources of our hidden river gods. The images in the paintings and poems are by turns amusing, surprising, or intangible, but always off-beat and evocative. Torches in Shadows is a unique pairing of poetry and art.

About the Author:

Hester Ohbi has been drawing and painting since childhood where she spent and still spends summers amid the rocks, fields, rivers, and mountains of central Pennsylvania. Her graduate studies in France afforded time to engage in European and American art. Shortly thereafter she became interested in the religions of Asia, especially Buddhism. A career in international development took Hester to colorful landscapes in Asia and Africa. Formal art studies included drawing and painting classes at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and painting classes at the Art League in Alexandria, Va.   In 2010, 2014, and 2015 Hester had solo shows at the Dumbarton Concert Gallery in Georgetown, Washington, DC. In 2015 she also had a solo show with Artsee, Washington D.C. A large piece was commissioned for Development Alternatives, Bethesda, Md. and another large piece hangs at Kaiser Permanente. The Washington DC commission of Arts bought one of her paintings for its Art Bank collection. Over the years she has been selected for juried shows at The Art League in Alexandria, Va., at the Blackrock Gallery in Germantown, Md., and at the Hill Gallery, Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C . Cornelia Rohde was raised in an Ohio apple orchard where she remembers a childhood spent hanging out in tree houses or weaving daisy chains. After completing a master’s degree in Massachusetts, she began her writing career as a curriculum developer, before moving overseas in 1968. She conducts her love affair with words about all the places in the world she still calls home: Bahamas, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Haiti, India, and South Africa. Glimpses into her life would reveal her performing as a professional synchronized swimmer for an underwater cocktail lounge, scaling the summit of Kala Patar, riding a donkey to Christophe’s Citadel, or sleeping on the top of an active volcano. She is a veteran of the 1970 Bengal cyclone and war, which she recounts in her book, Catalyst: In the Wake of the Great Bhola Cyclone. Her poems can be found in a variety of journals and anthologies in South Africa. She and her husband, Jon, currently live in Cape Town and Spanish Wells in the Bahamas.
