Description:

First Edition. 8vo: xxx, 403, [1]pp, with the half-title, 10 (of 11-the final plate never bound in, as often) full-page aquatints and an illustrated plan of Stonehenge on the Salisbury Plain. The plates include four views of Stonehenge, one of the Devil's bridge near Great Fall of the Monach, two views of Snowdonia and two of an unidentified castle. Recent calf spine with five raised bands and a red morocco lettering piece, marbled-paper covered boards, end papers renewed. A fine, fresh copy with only light wear to the board edges, the usual offsetting to pages facing plates, and virtually no foxing or browning. ESTC Citation No. T145932. Clarke is remembered as a mineralogist and antiquary (a colossal two-ton statue of a female figure dating from the third or fourth century B.C., long-thought to be Ceres, that Clarke shipped home from Greece is now in the Fitzwilliam Museum), but he was only 21 years old when he embarked on this journey as the tutor of the 16 year-old Henry James Tufton, 11th Earl of Thanet (1775-1849). In this charming book, Clarke describes their leisurely journey through southwestern England, with stops at Stonehenge, Cornwall and the Scilly Isles; extensive travels through Wales; a visit to Dublin and its environs, followed by travel through Snowdonia and northern Wales, before the return to London by way of Stratford. Along the way, Clarke kept the journal that became this early record of the English passion for seeking out picturesque scenery, ruins, and views, and collected the mineral specimens that formed the nucleus of his collection.
