About the Book

Description:

Early, uncommon edition of the classic hagiography of St. Luigi (Aloysius) Gonzaga, translated from Italian into Spanish by Jesuit Juan de Acosta. Following the first Italian edition of 1608, this translation was first published in 1622, with a Pamplona reprint appearing in 1623; the present edition, also of 1623 (presumably) and less common than the Pamplona imprint, bears permissions with that date. The Society of Jesus device appears on the title-page, and the text features decorative capitals and tailpieces. The work has enjoyed great popularity through the decades and has been translated into German, French, and English. The authority file of the BNE states that "Juan de Acosta" is a pseudonym of cardenal Juan de Lugo, S.J. Another interesting thing about the book is that the copy at the University of California in San Diego has an engraved plate that is not found in any other copy. Searches of WorldCat and NUC Pre-1956 find only four copies in U.S. libraries, while the Cat?logo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliogr?fico finds only three in Spain, and the OPAC of the BNE shows no copy of this edition. 4to (20.2 cm, 8"). [20], 256 pp. DeBacker-Sommervogel, I, 31 (not listing this ed.); Palau 51542 (never having seen a copy). Contemporary vellum, worn and chipped with spots of discoloration, ties now absent. Lacking the rear pastedown and free endpaper. Light to moderate waterstaining and spotting throughout; occasional small early inked check marks. Pinhole worming to lower and lower inner margins of some leaves, in some instances touching letters without obscuring sense. Bookseller Inventory #
