First American edition. English selections from "Etudes de la Nature," translated from the original French by Henry Hunter, D. D., Minister of the Scots Church, London Wall. Stated on p. ix, "We here present, in a separate volume, all the parts on the studies of nature, which relates to the subject of religion. . . . " This was issued in two volumes and also one volume; this copy is the one-volume issue, and has both the folding plate bound in at p. 54 and "The End" printed on the final page. With a dedication to the clergy of New England, signed in type: "Joseph Nancrede. Boston, March 1, 1797." Frontispiece and map engraved by Samuel Hill. Small 8vo. Frontis., [2] ff., 331 pp.; fold. map. ESTC W36508; Bristol B10094; not in Shipton & Mooney; not in Evans. Original full sheep, red leather spine label, rubbed with front cover a (very) little warped; spine chipped at head and title label with a bit of gilt lettering lost. Light to moderate age-spotting, notable browning and waterstaining to plates. Several dog-ears; front free endpaper tattered; outer edge of map shallowly tattered and with a tear extending from bottom edge to about 2 cm into illustration (affecting it slightly but without loss).
