Folio, polished contemporary paneled calf, the spine rebacked and edges sometime restored. 456 unnumbered ll. 8A-18A-D6E-V,Y8 (text complete) A-G8HhQq9Rr-Tt6 (Tt6 blank not present) a-f8g-i6 (printer's colophon not present. some light age toning, a bit heavier on the first few leaves, small repairs to edges or corners of 4 leaves with insignificant loss of print on the title-page and verso, a few light stains here and there, mostly marginal, an occasional tear or paper flaw, small faint embossed library stamp above title. A very well preserved copy of this rare item. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED COLLECTION OF ENGLISH STATUTES PASSED BETWEEN 1224 AND 1504, thus concluding with Henry VII. The volume opens with provisions confirming Magna Carta, and incldes the bishops' curse of 1253 on all who violate the Charter, the important Statute of Mortmain (1279) which prohibited further grants of land to religious communities without royal consent, a royal pardon for most of those involved in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, an enactment protectign the followers of Bolingbroke after the usurpation, and a mass of civil and criminal legislation of great interest to social and economic historians. Thomas Berthelet was not only the king's printer fro 1530 to 1547 but also the royal binder and bookseller, and "it would be hard to speak too highly of his taste and skill in bookbinding" Duff, 'A Century of the English Book Trade'). Whether the present volume was bound by him, however, is uncertain: for the borders, consisting largely of medallions and grids, cf. Oldham, 'English Blind-Stamped Bindings' pl. XLVII. United with the second volume, also offered by us, they provide the earliest complete edition of the English statutes. Bookseller Inventory # 26153
