Book Description G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. First printing. xvi, 417 pp, indexed, w/map endpapers and many photographic illustrations. Pictorial cloth boards, with just slight bumping to the corners, and a brief notation (mentioning the Aleutian Islands) on the dedication page. Overall a lovely copy, in the original brightly colored dust jacket, which is chipped at the corners and spine ends and has several short closed tears, as well as one horizontal tear on the spine. Holzworth recounts his extensive studies of the bears of Southeast Alaska (conducted on the islands of Admiralty, Chichagof, and Baranof) and offers an impassioned plea for their protection, contending that "the great Alaskan bears are harmless unless they are provoked or shot." Includes sections on the classification, description, habits, food, and intelligence of bears, as well as the value and making of films of bears and large game. Arctic Bibliography 7379; Tourville 2165. Seller Inventory # 11803
