[18] 217 [1]; [6] 229-358pp. Edinburgh: Andrew Hart & Richard Lawson, 1608. 263 x 176 mm. Modern calf in period style. Title-leaf a little stained, and small blank portion of upper right corner skillfully restored. Light browning, occasional foxing, but very good. A few marginal annotations in contemporary hand. First Edition in English, second issue, of Estienne's Traite preparatif a l'apologie pour Herodote (1566), with Edinburgh imprint dated 1608. The printer Henri Estienne was one of the greatest classical Greek scholars of the Renaissance, with a particular love for the Greek historians. "He was prolific in publishing texts, amongst them seventy-four Greek texts of which no fewer than eighteen were first editions. . . . His most popular work was his Traite preparatif a l'apologie pour Herodote (1566), a volume of 600 closely printed pages, which passed through fourteen editions in his lifetime.
