About this Item

With text illustrations. First volume uncut with orange wrappers (half of the back wrapper torn off), second volume has orange printed wrappers with front cover present but unattached; interior excellent, many leaves unopened. First editions of Hertwig's outstanding textbooks, the first published comprehensive picture of the structure of life and the cell. These profusely illustrated works were based on the distinguished scientist's numerous essays and lecturers. Divided into two parts, the first treats cells and tissue and the second provides the fundamentals of general anatomy and physiology. He here discusses his observation of the spermatozoa as they entered the egg and fused with its nucleus in five to ten minutes. Most important, however, Hertwig found that only one spermatozoon was required to fertilize an egg, and that once one spermatozoon entered the egg, the egg formed a vitelline membrane blocking any other spermatozoa from entering (see DSB). The second volume is also meant as a companion piece to his first and very popular textbook on human and other vertebrates, where he introduced the term "malformation of vertebrae embryos."Hertwig (1849-1922), a leader in the field of embryology, was professor of anatomy at Berlin after studying under Haeckel, publishing in the fields of animal cytology and embryology. He was founder of the Anatomisch-Biologische Institute in Berlin, and was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Garrison & Morton, 556.
