Inscribed and SIGNED by the author on ffep to Kim Roosevelt -- a wonderful association between two Cold War spies. Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt, Jr. (1916 - 2000) was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and was the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax, which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration, and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953. This US covert intervention resulted from Mossadegh's plan to nationalize the petroleum industry, side-lining the British and American companies then controlling Iranian oil. Melville-Ross was himself involved in post-war (WWII) intelligence, later working as an executive with British Petroleum before he turned his attention to writing spy novels. The plot of this novel involves the assassination of the Head of 'the Department' - Britain's very secret and very ruthless counter-intelligence unit - is the opening move in a conspiracy of global proportions and the UK is only the first nation to be held to ransom. In the vanguard of the counter-attack is the tough and resourceful agent Al Trelawney, a man committed to taking the fight to the enemy.;
