The early life of Father Riou, who became known as 'the Dr. Schweitzer of the Caribbean', is a surprising one. He grew up in the worst slum of the port of Le Havre. His father, a sailor, when at home was invariably drunk; his brother was a Communist; his sister - a kind hearted prostitute. His mother, a devoted, hard working woman, died because Roger could not afford to call a doctor in time. During the First World War, when Roger Riou was eight, he was already an adept thief, stealing from army stores and selling his loot on the black market. From petty theft the boy graduated to becoming an amateur pimp. When he was thirteen the police caught up with him. After being shockingly assaulted in prison, he was sent to a Reform School and then boarded out in the hope of rehabilitating him. It was during this time that the improbable conviction came to him that he had a vocation to be a priest. After a novitiate that was at times difficult, he was ordained at the age of twenty-two. Young Father Riou's ambition was to work amongst the poorest of the poor. He found them in the starving and disease-ridden Haitian island of Tortuga. At once he began to treat the people with the few medicaments his medicine chest contained; when these ran out he gave injections of sterile water, just to keep morale up and to show that someone cared.
