This splendid guide to the birds of Britain and Europe takes you well beyond the information you might find in a field guide. Organized taxonomically, it includes an introduction to each family, with information on food, habitat, eggs, and breeding and nesting behavior. Memorable descriptions and often astonishing facts make even the commonest birds worthy of new attention. A visual feast, Collins Birds features 500 color photographs and more than 1,000 illustrations and maps.

About the Author:
Dominic Couzens has written many books on birds and birdwatching, including two books published by Collins: Birds by Behaviour and Birds of Britain and Ireland. He is a regular leader of specialised tours both home and abroad, and is a regular contributor to Birdwatch magazine.
From Booklist:
Somewhere between a field guide and a -coffee-table book is this new offering from a bird expert who is also the author of many titles on the birds of Europe. The volume contains front matter that nicely covers general aspects of the natural history of Europe's birds. This is followed by a taxonomically organized treatment of more than 240 bird species. Each family is treated in turn with an introductory essay about the general familial characteristics. The standard textual descriptions are given for each species, including distinguishing behaviors and visual characteristics. The real stars here are the excellent visuals provided for each species. The beautiful full-color photographs, fine drawings of gender differences and maturity phases, and range maps make this work a joy to behold. Supplementary text includes a brief glossary, an index by common and scientific names, a brief bibliography, and a listing of national bird organizations from around Europe.

This richly illustrated and authoritative volume would make a nice addition to collections used by those interested in the birds of Europe and will thus be at home in ornithology reference collections. Size limits the usefulness of this title in the field, but those who are planning to go birding in Europe may well enjoy using this text as they prepare for their adventures. Recommended for comprehensive collections. Jeff Kosokoff
