From the Author:
I loved writing this adventure, and the next story in the series. A third appears in Moonstone's anthology Tales of Zorro, edited by Richard Dean Starr. I loved my characters. Young de la Vega, of course, and his mute brother Bernardo. But also their feisty girl compadre, Trinity. I helped Isabel Allende on her Zorro novel, and used Isabel's portrait of Diego Vega's mother, a mercurial firebrand and Gabrieleņo war leader. I expanded the character of Diego's father from her sketch, emphasizing the cool and steady Royal Spanish officer in him. I hope you enjoy the adventures, and the portrait of old California.
From the Inside Flap:
How did El Zorro become the hero of Old California? By growing into the sword-and-swashbuckling life from youth! This is the first tale of young Diego del Vega and his mute brother Bernardo on Don Alejandro del Vega's vast cattle lands. They visit grandmother Gray Owl's Gabrieleņo Native American village in the mountains, and explore the choppy waters off the coast with their feisty girl compadre, Trinity. They encounter marauding grizzly bears, rustlers, real pirates and sinister Spaniards. The adventures are thrilling but only a little more thrilling than this paradise for two boys: the glorious California country around  the tiny mission town of Pueblo de los Angeles.
